Read Harder: Women’s History Month
March is Women's History Month, so today, I thought I'd share some recommendations for books about women in history that also complete 2025 Read Harder Challenge tasks. We have memoirs and biographies about famous women in history, little-known women's history, historical fiction based on women's lives, and accounts from everyday women in history. Let's dive in!
#1: Read a 2025 release by a BIPOC author.

Fearless and Free by Josephine Baker
This posthumous memoir by the Josephine Baker—the dancer/spy/cheetah-toting Civil Rights activist who I became obsessed with as a teenager after Beyoncé dressed like her during a performance—is finally out in English. In it, she tells her life story through conversations she had with French journalist Marcel Sauvage, which are as funny and flirty as her onstage persona. —Erica Ezeifedi
#5: Read a book about immigration or refugees.

The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston
First published in 1976, The Woman Warrior is an account of Kingston's experiences growing up a Chinese American in California. She mixes her own first-generation immigrant story with her mother's stories of China, as well as with tales from Chinese folklore and history. The result is an imaginative, poetic, genre-bending picture of one woman's attempts to grapple with her history, as well as with racism, misogyny, and trauma. —Rebecca Hussey
