THE WICKED + THE DIVINE Dream Cast

Staff Writer

Hattie is a comics scholar and obsessive reader from Brighton(ish) but living in Glasgow, Scotland where she is working towards a PhD in Canadian Studies, more specifically about Québécois comics and politics. Mostly she reads comics about other peoples’ lives because she’s nosy like that. She is an enthusiastic, if not experienced, seamstress and could win Olympic Gold Medals if only Procrasti-Sewing and Procrasti-Baking were recognised sports. A not insignificant percentage of her free time is spent worrying about whether her cats like her as much as she likes them. She is resident Quebec Comics Monkey over at Graphixia where she likes to lay claim to being more Canadian than she really is. Twitter: @HattieK

Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s The Wicked + The Divine was one of my (and probably everyone’s) stand out comics of 2014. I can’t remember a series that has had me on tenterhooks this often and I credit it and Lumberjanes with getting me back into reading comics as they come out each month.  I was really surprised to see that we at Panels hadn’t already done a Dream Cast for the series but I was more than happy to fill that gap and so I have put together a list of who I think might be rather good at playing the characters were there ever to be a big (or small) screen adaptation of these comics.

Laura is the heart of The Wicked + The Divine, the character through whose eyes we observe these incredible events. And getting her casting right would be key to any big or small screen version of these stories. My top pick is the lovely Antonia Thomas, who played Alisha in Misfits and more recently Evie in the unfortunately named but surprisingly ok Scrotal Recall. Not only does she look quite a lot like Jamie McKelvie’s drawings of Laura but she’s also charming in every role she plays.

Laura

Lucifer: Luci, Luci, Luci, where to begin? Well in fact it was Jamie McKelvie tweeting a picture of Scarlet Johansson looking rather like Luci that inspired me to do this post. So since this is a dream casting after all that’s who I want to go with. I am a massive ScarJo fan and any chance to see her playing a feisty female should be grabbed, in my very humble opinion!

Luci

Amaterasu is the very first of The Pantheon that we meet in The Wicked + The Divine and while she quickly becomes more than a little overshadowed by Luci she certainly packed quite a visual punch for me when I first opened the book. I think Karen Gillan would be the perfect pick to play The Pantheon’s nicest member. Not only does she have the perfect hair but she was awesome in Guardians of the Galaxy and as Amy Pond in Doctor Who.

Amaterasu

Baal is one of the most intriguing members of The Pantheon and Issue 3 was a particular favourite of mine, not least because we got to see a little bit more about this character and what his story might be. John Boyega is going to be on our screens soon in Star Wars but before he gets super busy and famous perhaps he could come and do his thing for us as Baal.

Minerva: we don’t get to see much of Minerva but the little we do see makes me think that Maisie Williams might be just the person for the role. Wise beyond her years with plenty of sass and a don’t f*ck with me attitude, Maisie can hopefully find a bit of time around playing Arya in Game of Thrones to come on board with this project. (Backup choice, I would also love to see Tavi Gevinson in this role but she might be a bit too busy running Rookie and being awesome).

Minerva

Edited to add: Cassandra I absolutely love Cassandra and her relentless quest for the truth of this situation. Ataro Nakamura has only done a little bit of acting but her first hand knowledge of the music industry would certainly give her some insights into the world and fame of The Pantheon. I think it would be really cool to see what she would do with Cassandra’s determination, passion, curiosity, and intelligence.

The Morrigan was a tricky one for me, I wasn’t sure if I would cast one person for all three incarnations of The Morrigan or if I would pick someone I thought was versatile enough to play the three different parts. As you might be able to tell from my pictures I went for the latter. I love Emma Stone and I would love to see what she would do with these characters!

So, what do you think of my choices? How about some of the other characters from the comics, who would you cast for Baphomet, and how about Ananke herself? Let me know in the comments below!
