too soon book cover

Too Soon by Betty Shamieh (Avid Reader, January 28, 2025)

What exciting new voices in literary fiction are we going to get in 2025? Here’s one to look forward to reading this January. Too Soon is the debut novel from award-winning playwright Betty Shamieh. This novel follows three generations of Palestinian-American women and is the perfect read for lit fic readers who loved Pachinko and Queenie.

Arabella is 35 years old and struggling to make it as a theatre director in New York. Unlucky in both her career and in love, Arabella agrees to take on a buzzy reinterpretation of a Shakespearean classic in the West Bank right around the same time she allows her grandmother, Zoya, to set her up with Aziz, a doctor volunteering in Gaza. Meanwhile, Arabella secretly pines for Israeli American theatre designer Yoav, but she knows that relationship is going nowhere.

For Zoya, seeing Arabella and Aziz together takes her back to her own romantic past and her love for Arabella’s grandfather, a man who was not the one her parents arranged for her to marry. Meanwhile, Arabella’s mother, Naya, was married off at a young age and became a mother when she was only 16. Now that her children are grown up, Naya finds herself able to reevaluate her life for the first time as a fully grown adult.
