The Fault in Our Stars Trailer is … Okay. Okay?
First of all, don’t hate me. I love this book. I LOVE THIS BOOK. I mean, I ugly-cried and I don’t even care, because I loved this book so much.
Okay, are we cool?
I love the introduction. It sets it up well for people who have possibly not read the book for all the tears they’re going to cry at the end.
Then the “true” story starts.
Now, I don’t know if it’s because I’m preemptively suffering from Shailene Woodley overexposure syndrome (homegirl is in two of the biggest YA book-to-screen adaptations of the year between this and Divergent), but I did not love her delivery in the two and a half minutes that we got of her.
It all felt very “I’m sick and so should be soft spoken” to me. And weirdly, she maintains this level of voice throughout the entire trailer, so I felt like she came off as kind of wooden.
Now, Ansel Elgort on the other hand… When I read about his casting as Augustus, I was kind of thrown. He was not at all what I pictured (and let’s be honest, that’s how we all gauge these things initially, isn’t it?). I did not love the idea of him playing this character. It didn’t help that John Green tumbled this guy when someone said he looked like Augustus. And Ansel is Ansel, but Ansel is not THAT guy. I mean, dang.
That being said, I thought Ansel was fantastic in this trailer. He seems like a smart teenage boy in love with a girl, which is who we are supposed to see.
The trailer itself is decent, but it definitely feels put together in a way to specifically show nerdfighters that they’ve stayed true to the book by using some of the most memorable quotes from the text itself:
“But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.”
Or,
“You realize that trying to keep your distance from me will not lessen my affection for you.”
And, of course,
“Okay?”
“Okay.”
I’m still definitely going to see this movie, and the trailer still made me happy and sad all at once, but that’s mostly because I already know and love the story. .
