Beneath Devil's Bridge: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 39,831 ratings

A true crime podcast yields new revelations about a shocking murder in a riveting novel of suspense by Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author Loreth Anne White.

True crime podcaster Trinity Scott is chasing breakout success, and her brand-new serial may get her there. Her subject is Clayton Jay Pelley. More than two decades ago, the respected family man and guidance counselor confessed to the brutal murder of teenage student Leena Rai. But why he killed her has always been a mystery.

In a series of exclusive interviews from prison, Clayton discloses to Trinity the truth about what happened that night beneath Devil’s Bridge. It’s not what anyone in the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Falls expects. Clayton says he didn’t do it. Was he lying then? Or now?

As her listeners increase and ratings skyrocket, Trinity is missing a key player in the story: Rachel Walczak, the retired detective who exposed Pelley’s twisted urges and put him behind bars. She’s not interested in playing Clayton’s game—until Trinity digs deeper and the podcast’s reverb widens. Then Rachel begins to question everything she thinks she knows about the past.

With each of Clayton’s teasing reveals, one thing is clear: he’s not the only one in Twin Falls with a secret.

Review

“The suspenseful, multilayered plot is matched by fully realized characters. White consistently entertains.” Publishers Weekly

“If I’m lucky, maybe once in a blue moon, I read a book that leaves my mind reeling, heart aching and soul searching. One that haunts me long after The End. Beneath Devil’s Bridge is one of those books.” Mystery & Suspense Magazine

“True crime fans, Beneath Devil’s Bridge by Loreth Anne White is the one thriller you need to read this month.” POPSUGAR

“There are many layers to this story. Intertwining the setting makes the mystery even more riveting. The two timelines enhance the plot with the podcast being in the present and Rachel’s observations in the past. Readers will be kept guessing as the author brings in suspect after suspect.” Crimespree Magazine

“Perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Michele Campbell, and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, Beneath Devil’s Bridge will keep readers turning the page late into the night.” —The Nerd Daily

“[White’s] writing skills and [her] ability to literally chill me to the bone with her words is something that’s not easy to do.” Momfluencer

Beneath Devil’s Bridge was an atmospheric and suspenseful mystery! It was full of such vivid imagery and I felt like I was watching it instead of reading it.” Joyful Fiction

“I was completely invested from start to finish with this read and the icing on the cake was how it concluded. Just brilliant…well-thought-out and original!!” 2BabesandaBookshelf

“White has once again hit one out of the ballpark with her latest psychological thriller…I always like White’s books but this one is extra-ordinary! I highly recommend this novel.” The Book Review Crew

From the Publisher

Inspired by a horrific, heartbreaking true crime, Loreth Anne White’s latest novel may be her best yet—and that’s saying something.

Her prose is atmospheric; it is thoughtful and evocative and unflinching. In
Beneath Devil’s Bridge, Loreth whisks readers between two timelines: the immediate aftermath and investigation of teenage Leena Rai’s brutal murder in a small rural Canadian town, and the present day, when a podcaster, Trinity Scott, has latched on to the cold case for her latest investigatory series.

The reverberations of the crime reach far across the decades and spread through a listening audience newly obsessed with the failings of the tight-knit community and the shocking revelations Trinity brings to light. In the silent pauses between breaths, when Leena’s voice no longer sounds, there is a clarion call for justice.

If you haven’t yet read a Loreth Anne White book, this is a great place to start. Perfect for fans of
Mystic River or podcasts like Serial and My Favorite Murder, this is a mystery that doesn’t stop at asking, “What happened?” In the wake of the truth, those left behind reckon with “What now?” It’s an affecting novel from a supremely talented author, and one I’m thrilled to recommend to you today.

One of the best Murder Mysteries I've read!

One of the best Murder Mysteries I've read!
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a murder mystery novel that has kept me so engaged in the story that I didn’t want to put it down. And I mean it, this book, I didn’t want to put it down not for anything! I was riveted, glued to my seat, and wishing I could finish it faster so I could get all the answers I craved while also wishing it would never end- it’s THAT good. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the authors work before, but you can bet I’ll be buying all print copies of her previous ones. If it’s as addicting as this one, I’ll be reading her books one after another until I finish them all! AH! I am so glad I chose this book for last months amazons first reads. I HIGHLY recommend it! If you are a fan of true crime stories, true crime podcasts, and murder mysteries then this is the book you need in your life! While it’s not a true crime novel I believe it is based on one (I need to research this because I need that true crime book!). Also, it incorporates a true crime podcast, and of course a murder mystery that will leave you anxious for the truth! I didn’t see it coming, and to surprise a reader like who feels like she’s read EVERYTHING that’s a really good thing! Anyway, I obviously loved this book more than words can even express and I hope anyone out there that hasn’t read it will give it a chance! I’m going to keep this review fairly light as I don’t want to give the plot away at all (read it blind if you can!), so I’ll end it here PICK UP THIS BOOK! 𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    My Review and Thoughts:

Wowzer's. A big fat Wowzer's. Loreth Anne White can write a perfect tale. What an amazing storyteller. She is gifted in sending you on a trip of mystery, suspense, dread and what the hell is the truth style writing. She floored me with this book.

This is a brilliantly weaved whodunnit murder mystery. I was totally incased in this story as it slowly unfolded in flashbacks to the past and to the present to fully detail the plot that is thick with suspense and mystery. Loved the atmosphere of a true crime style setting.

The book contains everything to bring you into the fold of the unfolding narrative of the crime and all those involved. I loved the tension and how each chapter builds slowly on the characters and the unfolding murder mystery. A brilliant work of fiction that brings everything you the reader could want in a tight, tense and solid exploration of a wonderfully told tale.

This book grabbed me from the very start and held me tightly to it's written form. Love how each chapter is a narrative of certain characters involved in the mystery. The story is told in present day and told in the past actions and of the mystery unfolding, creating a spiraling perfection to bring out the ultimate truth.

This awesomely written book has so many twists and turns that it leaves you emotionally drained. I wanted to know what happened, I wanted to turn the page to find out who done it, I was giddy with anticipation.

This book weaved around so many complex situations, amazing characters driven throughout the plot. I was thoroughly entertained beyond all expectations. This was a random read for me, I had no real knowledge of the book. I hadn't read any reviews on it. I was floored and amazed at the complete conclusion of this story. This is a thick mystery driven written in a way like a true crime novel but displayed with a thick undercurrent of hidden truths.

I'm happy to say I am rating this book five out of five. I haven't read a five out of five book in quite a while, but I think this book deserves all the points. It kept me literally on the edge of my seat, and any book that does that deserves all the praise.

Would I Return to It Again: I loved it and absolutely deserves a second read down the lane of time, but what this book majorly did was create a new wonderful author for me to read and consume and to be a total Fan Boy to Loreth Anne White.

Would I Recommend: With out a single doubt. This book was awesome.

My Rating: 5 out of 5

Four Final Words: Complex deep storytelling. Brilliant.

This book is filled with a lot of hidden secrets, betrayals, deceptions and deep-seated violence, and surprising twists and turns. It was the best book I have read of this author to date. I loved the switch between timelines and from the different point of views. I couldn’t wait to read what would happen next . Buried lies and secrets have a way of getting out and there’s no way to stop it once it’s in motion. I have to say that was a great twist with Trinity Scott identity that I was already thinking in my head. I thought that was the case. The only issue I had with this book was that more punishment should have taken place to all who were involved no matter the role that played, big or small.

White weaves a complex plot that is so much more than a murder mystery. Her use of scene, nature and the elements to set a mood is masterful. She explores not simply the psychology of murder, but the social and psychological climates of a community. To what length will each of us go to protect our own and still believe we are doing right? The narrative will leave you pondering our collective responsibility for human atrocities. An exceptional read.

Retired police detective Rachel Walczak has her world turned upside down when her old case of the brutal murder 14 year old Leena Rai is brought back to life by eager crime podcaster, Trinity Scott. The convicted murderer, Clay Jay Pelley, the subject of Trinity's podcast, throws a loop in the closed case when he claims that he did not murder young Leena. This admonition open doors in the small, tight-knit community where everyone knows everyone's business and unlocks secrets that have remained buried for ages. The search for truth brings forth heartache, pain and closure for all those involved.

The writing style of this book is very interesting. Each chapter is in the present or past of one of the main characters. Being that the community in the book is small, it was interesting to read the past chapters, I could imagine how life was like in the town as if I lived there. There are a lot of characters in the book and as I read I felt like a member of the community when I remembered they were a classmate of one of the characters.

My only nitpick about the book is its end. While it ended on a positive note, I feel like the ending was predictable. I felt a little disappointed as the book kept running on all four cylinders with the story only for it to end in such a way that left me thinking, "Wait, that's it!"

Overall, this book is a page turner that keeps you guessing on what is the truth and what is the truth of all those involved in the story.
