Staff Writer

Christine Hoxmeier can usually be found hard at work in her beloved home of Austin with a cup of coffee in one hand and a taco in the other. She spends her free time reading, writing, and dreaming of a teleportation device so she can visit her friends spread across the globe on a daily basis. If it were possible to live inside one Disneyland attraction for the rest of her life, Christine would cheat and choose to split her time between It's A Small World and The Enchanted Tiki Room. Ah, fan fiction. The thing one turns to when the next book in the series is nowhere in sight or the story is over and—for a plethora of reasons—you don’t like how it ended. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A PLIGHT A CERTAIN FANTASY FANDOM IS CURRENTLY GOING THROUGH? Ahem. My friends, whether you first came to Westeros through the books or through the HBO show, Game of Thrones fan fiction is here for you.

Now, everyone wants something different out of their fanfic, so I’ve tried to include a variety of Game of Thrones fan fiction styles and genres. The night is dark and full of angsty Jon/Dany fic. Enjoy!

i loved a maid as spry as spring (with sunrise in her hair) by thegirl

“Hello,” she says to the little baby, her second child, her first girl, who clenches her tiny fists with her tiny fingernails, her eyes stormy and wisps of hair dark. She had been thinking of Lyanna for a daughter, but it didn’t fit. Neither did any other pretty, limp name. This daughter of the north was made of sterner stuff.

“Eddara,” she said, after a moment “as strong as a mountain, my lovely one.” [Set before the books/TV show, completed, 17,000 words, rated mature]

Pairings/Shipping-Focused Game of Thrones Fan Fiction

Look, with a giant cast of characters, it’s impossible to even begin to touch on all the pairings and ships within Game of Thrones. I’ve included a handful of fics from a few of the most popular ships (because goodness knows you could probably do a list of 50 Jon/Dany easily), and a few more obscure ships, because that’s what fanfic is all about.

Jaime/Brienne

i could never define (all that you are to me) by sameboots

The Army of the Dead is upon them. One last night of peace at Winterfell before the entire world as they know it comes crumbling down. Jaime has some things to take care of, namely, one Brienne of Tarth and what remains unspoken between them. [One shot, 5,000 words, rated explicit]

A modern AU, set in the UK, featuring Renly/Loras. [Completed, 20 chapters, 96,000 words, rated teen]

Dany/Robb

Frozen Fire by rainonmonday

Eddard Stark offered her a deal. Safe return to the Seven Kingdoms, but in exchange she would need to marry his son, to keep her under watch instead of killing her like Robert wanted. [Completed, 51 chapters, 133,000 words, rated teen]

Lyanna/Rheagor

Hell is Empty by ashotofjac

Hell, she finds, is empty and all the devils are at Court. [Completed, 75 chapters, 198,000 words, rated mature]

Oberyn/Sansa

there is nothing lost (but may be found, if sought) by branwyn

One night shortly after his arrival in King’s Landing, Oberyn is approached in the gardens by a stranger, hooded and cloaked. When she asks him to help her die, he takes her back to Dorne instead. Taking her to safety is easy enough; keeping her safe is a different matter. [Completed, 11 chapters, 69,000 words, rated explicit]

For Fear Tonight Is All by Silberias

Tyrion knew, as he gazed up at the dark skinned Martell man, that this was perhaps his only chance to spirit Sansa out of King’s Landing and away from his father’s greedy fingers. Tywin Lannister would have married the girl himself if he felt he could have gotten away with it, and so Tyrion knew his own marriage was no protection to Ned Stark’s daughter whatsoever.

“Invite her, demand her, steal her—whatever you choose, Prince Oberyn, choose it soon. Else my lady wife shall break into more pieces than the stars.” [Incomplete, 99 chapters, 239,000 words, rated mature]

Gendry/Arya

Malevolent and without form by SecondStarOnTheLeft

It is a tale that comforts men and reassures them. Even though the knight is too late to save his lady, he gains a kingdom and a queen even fairer than the maid he lost. But the truth is not so simple. A war is not one story; it is thousands speaking at once. We do not know what the maid thought, or the prince’s wife, herself a princess by birth. And other ladies too, whose parts in this tale are further obscured, as often happens when histories are written by men.

This is their story. This was their war. [Completed, 25 chapters, 155,000 words, rated mature]
